See my previous post for the explanation of this series. Basically, I'm throwing ideas out and hoping I get a bite (aka volunteer) to make them happen.
Affects: Rhythmbox
Issue: Rhythmbox should have full iPod support. Banshee, Exaile, and Amarok already do - why not RB? Yes, I know you can play your music with it, and even transfer files, but when transferring files Rhythmbox does not update the database, making them unplayable by the device itself. I'm guessing this is probably relatively simple to fix, especially if the different players are all able to share similar code for these kinds of tasks, but I guess I don't really know.

Yeah, Rhythmbox has great
Yeah, Rhythmbox has great iPod support through libgpod for most players. It's just that Apple changes the database everytime they make a new model and now also obfuscate it with encryption/signatures...
I guess that we should
I guess that we should support (praise) the device vendors who are commited to the GNU/Linux (or even Ubuntu) hardware support. In Hardy (or any Ubuntu, that is), support for products of vendors like Apple who simply ignore GNU/Linux should not be made a priority, don't you think?
I can imagine Apple puts a lot of money and effort into advertising in North America, but still, tiny steps like buying a "free" (as in freedom) music player and blogging about it might be a good thing in the future - and you wouldn't have to worry about Linux support!
(On the other hand, I think when the iPod user community really wanted, one of them would hack the support for GNU/Linux. And that's okay, the more compatibility the better. But please, Canonical, don't spend time on this one :o)
Huh? Full iPod support works
Huh? Full iPod support works fine for me in Rhythmbox in both Gutsy and Feisty. I transfer songs to an iPod Shuffle all the time, and it works beautifully, updating the database and everything.
